When an individual gets a cut on their foot and it gets infected, cellulitis, a bacterial infection, can develop. The main bacteria responsible for this type of infection are streptococcus and staphylococcus. This infection can happen to anyone, regardless of age or race, but is most common in middle-aged to elderly people, and those with compromised immune systems, circulation problems, or other medical conditions. Cellulitis is not contagious as it forms in the deeper layers of the skin. Symptoms usually begin as a small area of tenderness, swelling, and redness that spreads to adjacent skin. Pain can develop, and it can interfere with normal functioning. If you believe you have cellulitis anywhere on your feet, it is strongly suggested that you contact a podiatrist for treatment.

What Is Wound Care?
Wound care is the practice of taking proper care of a wound. This can range from the smallest to the largest of wounds. While everyone can benefit from proper wound care, it is much more important for diabetics. Diabetics often suffer from poor blood circulation which causes wounds to heal much slower than they would in a non-diabetic.
What Is the Importance of Wound Care?
While it may not seem apparent with small ulcers on the foot, for diabetics, any size ulcer can become infected. Diabetics often also suffer from neuropathy, or nerve loss. This means they might not even feel when they have an ulcer on their foot. If the wound becomes severely infected, amputation may be necessary. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to properly care for any and all foot wounds.
How to Care for Wounds
The best way to care for foot wounds is to prevent them. For diabetics, this means daily inspections of the feet for any signs of abnormalities or ulcers. It is also recommended to see a podiatrist several times a year for a foot inspection. If you do have an ulcer, run the wound under water to clear dirt from the wound; then apply antibiotic ointment to the wound and cover with a bandage. Bandages should be changed daily and keeping pressure off the wound is smart. It is advised to see a podiatrist, who can keep an eye on it.

Sever’s disease affects the heel. It can happen in children and young teenagers who frequently participate in running and jumping activities. Parents may notice their child is limping or walking on tiptoes, which are common symptoms of Sever’s disease. This condition can happen as a result of repetitive stress to the heel bone growth area. As the heel grows, the consistent activity may cause the growth plate to heal improperly, possibly causing Sever's disease. The growth plate can be protected by wearing shoes that fit well while engaging in these types of activities. Having good arch support and cushioning may help the heel to recover in a timely manner. Treatment generally begins with temporarily stopping the activity that caused this condition, and it may help to elevate the affected foot as often as possible. If your child has symptoms of Sever’s disease, it is strongly suggested that a podiatrist is consulted as quickly as possible who can provide permanent treatment solutions.
Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Jed Wells, DPM from Jed Wells, DPM Foot Specialist. Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.
Sever’s Disease
Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.
Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.
Symptoms
Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.
Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

People with flat feet who enjoy running may experience challenges in finding the right running shoe. There are several factors to consider when deciding which type of shoe to purchase. These can consist of the gait cycle, the individual foot, and the range of motion. Some people have collapsed arches that can cause their feet to become flat due to muscle weakness. Patients with flat feet may opt for a shoe that has additional arch support to help the foot regain strength. Adults who have anatomically flat feet may choose a shoe without arch support, which may help to protect the knees. Research has shown that many flat-footed runners may feel better when stability shoes are worn, even though they may not help to correct the foot structure. Wearing a full-contact midsole shoe may help to protect the entire foot while running, therefore, these shoes are a popular choice among people who have flat feet. If you have flat feet and would like more information about what type of running shoes to purchase, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can guide you toward the best choice.

It is important to note that foot pain is nothing to take lightly. Since humans use their feet every day for a wide range of activities, maintaining proper foot health and addressing any potential foot pain is critical. Occasionally, foot pain may result from wearing the wrong type of shoe for the specific activity that is being pursued. For example, many individuals who spend a lot of time walking are not wearing shoes that are well suited for this. When an individual engages in walking, it is beneficial the shoes have a significant amount of arch support. This means shoes such as flip flops or flats generally are not well suited to this activity. High heels also are ill-fitted to the activity of walking because this kind of shoe forces the weight of the body to the balls of the feet. Therefore, a patient can try to remember to choose shoes that match the activity they are engaging in.
